Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Listed: The Great Depression

For this week’s Listed featurette, I wanted to take a look at a bunch of Depression-era books:

  1. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Originally Published 1939. LT
  2. Spanish Fly by Will Ferguson. Originally Published 2007. LT
  3. Dust by Arthur Slade. Originally Published 2003. LT
  4. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Originally Published 1960. LT
  5. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Originally Published 2006. LT
  6. Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. Originally Published 1999. LT
  7. Al Capone Does my Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko. Originally Published 2004. LT
  8. Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. Originally Published 1997. LT
  9. North River by Pete Hamill. Originally Published 2007. LT
  10. The Well and the Mine by Gin Phillips. Originally Published 2008. LT

I tried to think of and find more YA and children’s books about the Great Depression, but had a hard time with that! Do you know of any that I am missing?

The series that immediately springs to my mind is the Kit Kittredge books (she’s one of the American Girls). Can’t think of any others, though.

  • Christina

“Somewhere around the corner”, 1994, by Jackie French. Childrens/YA book about a girl who accidentally timetravels back to the Depression in Australia.
