Set in the universe of Sara Douglass’ Axis Trilogy/Wayfarer Redemption Trilogy/Threshold/Beyond the Hanging Wall/Darkglass Mountain universe, this short story tells the story of how a couple of Icarii’s discovered that the father of their race was a sparrow, and how they bring their heritage of wings and flight to the rest of their race.
So, I’m finally starting Douglass’ The Infinity Gate. And I really do love everything she has ever done, with the exception of The Crucible which made me rather uneasy. Anyway, to get myself in the mood for the awesomeness of Sara Douglass, I decided to head over to her site and reread one of my favourite short stories that she has up on her site.
And it was just as good as I remembered it.
I love legends, and mythology, and fairy tales, and all sorts of like. And I love folklore that tells us how things got to be what they are. And so a story that tells us how the Icarii got their wings? It’s just all kinds of wonderful!
First, it shows us how much Douglass put into the creation of her characters. This background explains so much about the Icarii, and about characters that are central to both The Axis Trilogy and The Wayfarer Redemption. It explains why Sunsoars love who they love, explains their love of heights, explains the wings, explains everything.
Secondly, it’s … well … MORE of that world that was my first real epic fantasy obsession.
And it totally put me in the mood to really dive into The Infinity Gate.
The Bottom Line
Highly recommended for any fan of Douglass’ Axis Trilogy or Wayfarer Redemption trilogy. Something more to delve into in that world, which is always a lot of fun for a fan of any sort of book.
