The Story

Pippi LongstockingPippilotta Delicatessa Comestibles Windowshade Curlymint Mackrelmint Ephraim’s Daughter Longstocking lives alone at Villa Villekulla. Well, not TOTALLY alone – she has, after all, a monkey and a horse. And the two kids who live next door: Tommy and Annika.

The three children soon become good friends, with Tommy and Annika becoming absolutely charmed with the young girl who lies about everything and manages to make a boring task seem extraordinary.

This book tells of the adventures of Pippi, her two friends and her two animals. And oh, what adventures they are.

The Review

I feel so deprived that I never read this as a child. I mean, I had seen the movie, but it’s totally not the same as reading a book, you know? So I was rather excited to finally get my

The character of Pippi Longstocking was totally based on Anne (from LMM’s Anne of Green Gables). This on one hand totally made her charming, but on the other hand didn’t make her feel so super original. I mean, she went a bit further than Anne as far as making stuff up goes (if that’s possible) and doing unbelievable feats, but the writing wasn’t nearly as magical and lyrical as Montgomery’s is.

When not comparing this to AoGG, I totally thought it was adorable and quite charming. Pippi is QUITE the troublesome girl in the eyes of the grown-ups in the book, and understandably so, but from the children’s perspectives she’s so much fun and there is NEVER a dull moment when Pippi was around.

The Bottom Line

It was cute little book. I definitely want to keep my eyes open for Pippi Goes on Board and Pippi in the South Seas, and I’m still feeling a little deprived that I didn’t get to read them when I was a child.

  4. I saw this movie when I was little, too. But I’ve never even seen the book anywhere. It does sound cute.
