I’m keeping this spoiler-free for those who decided not to read the whole book on Saturday.
I first read the HP books some time between when Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix were published. Before then, I was avoiding them like the plague. I’m a rather stubborn person, and had no desire to read something that everyone was completely obsessed over; I reasoned to myself that they were so popular already that they didn’t need another fan. Then my friend and I made a deal – she would read the Lord of the Rings books if I would read the Harry Potter ones. She didn’t finish The Fellowship of the Ring, while I got hooked on Harry Potter.
These past few years has had me, like many fans, waiting in anticipation for yesterday. Unlike many other fans, though, I decided not to reread the whole series before book 7 was released. I’ve decided that I’ll be doing that over the fall/winter months, but probably won’t post much about it here, as I’m sure a good majority of people will be sick of HP by that point in time.
While Rowling is, by no means, the greatest writer around today, the style of her writing always manages to draw me in. And while a lot of times I expect what is going to happen (but definitely not all of the time), she writes it in such a way that I am still left shocked or thrilled at the way the event happens. She certainly hasn’t disappointed for this installment either; Deathly Hallows has become my favourite of the series. And while I wish that she had gone more in depth in some instances, while I wish there was more time with some of the secondary characters, I loved it all.
I have to admit, though, as much as I love the series, I am happy it is over. (Sacrilege, I know!) As much as I loved it all, and even though I’m going to be rereading the series as a whole in the near future, it’s definitely time for me to move on emotionally, time to find new series’ and fandoms to fall in love with.

i thought the ending was… well, not exactly bad, but… terrible. Yeah, that’s the word. Come online and I’ll rant about it.

Sorry, Shan, would do, but I’m actually on my way out the door – driving to London to go to the folk fest today. We’ll talk later this week, though, k?

I agree with you that she certainly isn’t the best prose writer but she does always manage to draw me in. I came to care about the characters and will miss them, but think it was a good ending to the series.

I was sad to see it end, but I think you’re right. It had to end eventually, and I couldn’t have asked for a better final book.

Tanabata – Yes, I will miss the characters dreadfully, but at least we can go back and revisit the series whenever we miss them too much. ;)
Nymeth – She definitely tied things together well in the end, so I totally aagree with you. :)

my sister read hallows the day before me so i told her that she couldn’t talk to me for the whole day. This soon spread to her not looking at me because her facial expressions gave stuff away.
my sister ended up crying the whole day because of the book. i didn’t cry, but i rarely cry in books, there were tear jerking moments tho.
i really liked the book. there were people that died that i didn’t expect.
O Fred how i’ll miss thee!
