It’s been such a wonderfully relaxing week thus far; definitely exactly what I needed. And though I didn’t go anywhere exciting, sitting around while reading a book or watching movies for days on end can sometimes be exactly what I need.
But there have been a few exciting things that have happened this week; mainly in the form of book purchasing, Transformers and Harry Potter. Yes, I purchased many books. I was downtown one afternoon and spent the majority of that time perusing used bookstores. I managed to come home with only a good half dozen books (the self control that took!), including Robertson Davies’ Fifth Business (which I am tired of taking out of the library whenever I get a craving to read it), Gaston LeRoux’s The Phantom of the Opera (which I’ve always been meaning to read), L.M. Montgomery’s Along the Shore (Attic Books never lets me down on the L.M. Montgomery front!), and a book on logos and letterheads (which I am sure I will find quite useful).
Speaking of Attic Books, they also had a lovely little collection of L.M. Montgomery postcards, and I had to pick up a couple of those.
As for Transformers, I positively loved it. It was so pretty and the autobots were so sexy, and I totally wanted to take Bumblebee home with me because he was so adorable. It was very cool how real they could make the Transformers look, and how much emotion could be conveyed on their faces. I really don’t know what else to say about the movie; I’m going to have to see it at least once more in theatres and then am going to purchase it as soon as it comes out on DVD.
Then of course there is Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix. My mom likes to tell me that I’m a bit of a literary purist; in other words I very rarely thoroughly enjoy movies based on books (with the exception of most things BBC related – they always seem to do a good job). Order of the Phoenix was my favourite of the HP books so far, and I can happily say the same about the movie. There were a few things that annoyed me about the movie, but overall I loved it – especially the cast. Evanna Lynch was the most perfect Luna that they could have found; Helena Bonham Carter was positively terrifying as Bellatrix; Imelda Staunton made me hate Umbridge even more than previously. I wish there had been more Tonks, as well as more Fred, George and Ginny, but what they were there for was lovely.
While my friends didn’t like the score I thought it suited the movie quite well. I haven’t heard anything else that Nicholas Hooper has done (at least not to my knowledge), but it was positively beautiful.
However, let’s face it, movie trailers are definitely one of the most exciting part of going to the movies. Am thoroughly looking forward to The Spiderwick Chronicles. Interested to see how close this follows the books. Will want to reread the books soon to get the story back in my head. (Lovely illustrations in the books!) Also, I am curious about “1-18-08.” I’m hoping that the movie lives up to it being so mysterious…

I am so out of touch – I had no idea Helena Bonham Carter would play Bellatrix! It sounds like a perfect choice!
I gave up on Harry Potter movies after the third, but you’re making me want to give this one a try.

Nymeth, I enjoyed the movie, but if you gave them up, maybe you’ll want to wait until it’s on dvd or at a cheap theatre. But yes, I couldn’t imagine anyone else as Bellatrix. :) She did a wonderful job.

Used Bookstores are too much fun. :)
I still haven’t seen Transformers. It’s supposed to be playing at our local theatre for at least another week so hopefully I’ll have time to see it (we only have 3 screens so sometimes movies rotate out pretty fast). As for HP, I loved it for the same reasons you mentioned but like you there were a couple of things that annoyed me about it. I didn’t notice the score too much except in the beginning. I’ll have to pay closer attention the next viewing. :)
