The 25 Pains of Kennedy Baines

Dede Crane - The 25 Pains of Kennedy BainesI figured since I had just finished one book about a women obsessed with all things P&P, I may as well continue the trend. (Am all out of books where that is the case, unless want to reread Bridget. May do that this week while on holidays, we’ll see if I run out of other books. Ha!)

Kennedy is a fifteen year old girl who loves the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, and has read the book numerous times. She has parts of the book memorized, and has a bit of a thing for Colin Firth.

When an old roommate of her mother’s comes to visit for a couple of weeks from England, and brings her eighteen year old son (Colin), Kennedy is thrilled. The fact that an old friend of his is constantly hanging around them doesn’t strike her as particularly fun, though – especially since this friend comes across as a little weird, and Kennedy would really just like some time alone with Colin.

And then there is the creepy cyber stalker that Kennedy has listening in on her MSN conversations…

This book would be the perfect book to introduce teenage girls to Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice. It’s a cute and amusing little book, with the synopsis of and quotes from P&P interspersed throughout the book. Of course it is accompanied by the main character’s view on all things relating to P&P:

She can’t believe they made a new version of Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley. Why? Why? When the BBC version is already perfect. . . She never wants to see it, not even on video, afraid it will ruin the book fo r her, wreck the image in her mind from the BBC version.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It was very cute, and anything that has random quotes from P&P in it is going to be thoroughly enjoyable. I didn’t realize that the author was Canadian, though, which is very fun – I don’t read enough Canadian authors, and really ought to change that! This is the first YA book that the author has written, so I’ll be on the lookout for her other book, Sympathy.

  1. Ah yes… I remember falling in love with Mr Darcy and Captain Wentworth when I was in my first bloom 12 years ago. I am personally more inclined towards Austenland than this book.

  3. Having loved your reviews and recommendations in the past, I felt obliged to return the favor. While it is chick lit (which I enjoy to a certain degree as long as it is well written), Me & Mr. Darcy by Alexandra Potter is fun and really delves into the Mr. Darcy myth. It’s also a retelling of P&P of course. It really analyzes why we all love that Mr. Darcy so much! It’s a great read, I really recommend it. I read Austenland on your suggestion and found Me & Mr. Darcy from that book.
