Austenland

Author: Hale, Shannon
Originally Published: 2007

Shannon Hale - Austenland Jane has a closet obsession with Pride and Prejudice and Mr. Darcy. (Really, what girl doesn’t have some sort of obsession with Darcy?) However, when a great aunt dies and leaves a non-refundable three week vacation at Pembrook Park in her will to Jane, Jane is slightly appalled.

Pembrook Park is a “holiday destination” in England for rich women who want to live in the Regency period. They wear the clothing, speak the language, go to balls, and (of course) are surrounded by Regency men. When Jane finally gives in to going on this holiday, she views is as one last hurrah before giving up the idea of a Darcy in her life, and thinks of it as immersion therapy. And if therapy were this fun in real life, I think everyone would want to go.

The fangirl in me giggled the whole way through this book. Oh, it was adorable. And witty. And it (kind of) took place in the Regency period.

My main problem with most chick lit is that I have a hard time relating to the characters in the books – Jane not only seemed more realistic, but she also has the same problem I have – an obsession with fictional men. Which made this book even more fun.

“Things aren’t working out so well, and each time the men in your life disappoint, you let Mr. Darcy in a little bit more. Perhaps you’ve come to the point where you’re so attached to the idea of that scoundrel, you won’t be satisfied with anything less.”

Plus, Jane was a Graphic Designer which gives the book automatic cool points.

I would highly recommend this book to any woman who loves Jane Austen’s books. Or even the Bridget Jones’ books – I’m passing this book on to my mother and insisting she puts down everything else she is reading in order to discover Pembrook Park. Also, I think Mr. Nobley might have just kicked Mark Darcy out of my number one spot for hot Darcyish characters.

  5. This book sounds so cute! I know most of Shannon Hale’s books are YA. Is this one too? The cover looks familiar to me but I keep thinking I saw it in the adult section and didn’t connect the name.

  6. Lisa – This one’s not YA, which is probably why you saw it in the adult section. But it’s got nothing inappropriate for young adults, it’s just all the main characters are quite a bit older. It’s a cute book, you’ll have to read it. :)
