The Year of the Secret Assignments

Author: Moriarty, Jaclyn
Originally Published: 2004

Lydia, Emily and Cassie are in the tenth grade at Ashbury – a private school. The first English assignment of the year is to participate in a pen-pal exchange with Brookfield – a rival school, where all the “bad kids” go. This pen-pal program leads to secret assignments, secret meetings, broken hearts and a battle between the schools.

This was such an adorable book. It was written in the form of letters, diary entries, transcripts and more letters. I usually have a hard time getting involved in books that are solely written like letters and such (Anne of Windy Poplars was my least favourite Anne book for that reason alone), but in this case it didn’t prove a problem for me at all, and was part of the charm of the book. I have to say that I was pleansantly surprised how the writing from each person – whether in diaries or letters – sounded so completely different from the others.

The adventures these kids had! I wish my time in high school had been this much fun.

  1. Windy Poplars sucks

Now you have to read ” THE Murder of Bindy Mackenzie” which carries on the characters.
