For some reason, it always (always being the whole two books of hers that I’ve read now) takes me such a long time to get into Funke’s books. I’m not sure why, because once I got past that certain point, I loved the book. The concept of the book is something that no reader could not love – imagine if you had the ability to read things out of a favourite book. Imagine if you could bring your favourite characters into the real world! I know that there are innumerable fey and characters I would personally love to be able to draw out from a book.
But of course, if you could pull something out of the story, there’s always the possibility that you’d pull out the bad guys. Which is what happened in Inkheart. One evening, while Mo’s reading aloud to his wife, three characters from the book appear in front of him – and his wife disappears.
Years later, these characters come back into his and his daughter’s life. Capricorn, the main evil villain guy, kidnaps Mo in order to make him read more items out of books for him – first gold, then a thing that can only be described as something out of your worst nightmare.
Parts of this book remind me of the movie Stranger Than Fiction. (You know, the one with Emma Thompson who is one of the greatest people in the world.) Stranger Than Fiction deals with an author who realizes that the character she’s writing a story about is a real person. In this book, the author of Inkheart (not Funke, but her fictional author in the book) meets one of the characters who was brought out of the book by Mo. Could you imagine that – meeting one of your creations face to face? I’m certain it would be enough for one to question one’s sanity…

This is one on my list to check out sometime. I am even more intrigued after the comparison to Stranger Than Fiction, a movie I loved.

I am reading this book right now, and am enjoying it so far. I think I might buy the sequel at the bookstore today, and then she has a book about a dragon that I thought looked interesting. Will have to add it to my list. I would like to have both books read before the movie comes out, and I really do enjoy the concept of the two books.

One more thing, my eyes just happened to see where you have me linked on your list. My blog is actually “The Written WORLD”. There is another blog that is “Word”. Just thought I would point the typo out to avoid confusion. :)

Mo was awesome. Really awesome. I’ll have to get inkspell one of the next times I go into a bookstore… don’t know when that will be though – I’ve banned myself from Chapters for the next little while as my stack of unread books is becoming slightly unbearable. ;)

I loved Inkheart. :) This book made me want to read all of Funke’s books. Which I have. I agree that the novels start off slow. I’m looking forward to the movie.

I found this book interesting. It had a nice plot that was able to carry through the whole book and leave room for more books. It was a little difficult to get into it at first, but it really grew on me. Dustfinger is my absolute favorite! I encourage people to give this book a chance. It’s a little dry at first, but once you get into it, you’re hooked.
