Miss Wyoming
At twenty-eight, Susan Colgate is an ex-beauty queen, washed up child star and divorced rock-n-roll wife. John Johnson is a Hollywood producer who hasn’t produced a hit in years and is going through a mid-life crisis. One day, the two happen to meet in a cafe, take a long walk, and seem to fall in love in the span of an afternoon. The next day, Susan Colgate is missing, and John is determined to hunt Susan down, no matter the cost.
Last time I went to visit Shannon, she told me that I was in desperate need of more Douglas Coupland in my life, and as I was leaving made certain that I had a copy of Miss Wyoming in my hands. I feel ashamed as a Canadian that I’ve only read bits and pieces of Coupland’s stuff so far, while others positively rave about him. Seriously. Where is my support for good Canadian authors? Pfft. I lose.
I am happy to say though, that this won’t be the last Coupland book I read. Although this wasn’t a book that I positively couldn’t put down, I really liked the narration. It was a little disjointed and confusing to follow at first – each chapter in the book switches between what’s happening in the present and what happened to all of the many characters up to the present, but once I got used to that… well, it was fabulous to know exactly what happened to each character that made them exactly who they are.
